Forged in the Ordinary

“Whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.” - 1 John 2:6

We often imagine discipleship as a classroom or a stage. We think of sermons, conferences, or podcasts. And while God absolutely uses those, most discipleship is not forged in the spotlight. It is built in the ordinary.

When Jesus walked with the disciples, not every moment was recorded. But we know they traveled together. Lived together. Spent time side by side. And in that time, questions were asked. Lessons were repeated. Faith was shaped. Not through a sermon, but through consistency.

There is power in the unrecorded moments. Power in the day-to-day faithfulness of walking with Jesus and helping others do the same. That is what discipleship really looks like. It is forged through repetition. Through showing up. Through paying attention to what God is doing in someone else’s life and helping them see it too.

Jesus forged disciples by inviting people into His life. He taught as He walked. He corrected as He watched them respond. He modeled how to serve, how to lead, and how to suffer. And after His resurrection, even then, He continued to appear to them in what seemed like ordinary moments, only now they carried eternal weight.

What this tells us is simple but challenging. If we want to make disciples, we do not need a platform. We need to be present. We need to open our lives, not just our mouths. And if we want to grow as disciples, we need to stop waiting for a mountaintop moment. Discipleship is forged through following Jesus day in and day out.

The moments that seem forgettable are often where the deepest formation takes place. Stay faithful. Keep walking. Keep listening. Keep obeying. Because disciples are not made in flashes of brilliance. They are forged in the ordinary.
