Staying Secondary
"He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light." - John 1:8
John the Baptist had a powerful ministry. Crowds came to hear him preach. People respected him. Some even wondered if he was the long-awaited Messiah. But John never let the attention confuse his assignment. Scripture says he was not the light. He came to point to the light. John understood something we often struggle with. In God’s kingdom, your role is not to shine for yourself but to reflect the One who deserves all the glory.
Humility in ministry is not thinking less of yourself. It is thinking rightly about yourself. John knew exactly who he was and who he was not. He was a messenger, not the Messiah. He was a voice, not the Savior. He was sent to prepare the way, not be the way. That clarity protected his heart and kept his focus on Jesus instead of on himself.
We live in a world that rewards spotlight and platform. It is easy to slip into the mindset that your value is tied to how visible you are or how much applause you get. But the kingdom of God does not operate that way. The moments that matter most are often unseen. The ministry that impacts eternity is often quiet. You shine brightest when you stop trying to be the light and start reflecting it.
When your goal is to make Jesus known, not yourself, pressure fades. You stop competing. You stop comparing. You stop carrying the weight of trying to impress people. Your life becomes steady and simple. You draw attention to Jesus with your words, your actions, and your character. You become a sign that points others to Him.
Staying secondary is not weakness. It is worship. It is choosing to let Jesus be the center while you faithfully play your part. John understood that, and God used his life in a way that still impacts the world today.
Let your prayer be the same. Not to be the light, but to reflect it. Not to be noticed, but to make Jesus seen. When you stay secondary, God shines through you more clearly than you ever could on your own.
